First Episode Friday is a new weekly feature on this blog where I watch the first episode, or the pilot episode, of a television show.

The only rule is that i can’t have watched the show before!

it can be random pilot episodes of shows i see on the internet, new upcoming shows just being premiered or shows that i have been meaning to watch but never got around to watching even one episode!

The first episode of a television show is important to me. It is where it all starts and can make and break not only a show, but the retention of viewers. While pilot episode are not always amazing, i mean they are the first episode of the series, they must still be entertaining, interesting and reveal enough of the characters, storyline and world to make me want to continue watching.

This week’s show is ‘The Romeo Section’ and to be totally honest i know nothing about this series. I spotted it on my usual ‘television watching’ website and decided it sounded interesting and i may as well watch the first episode- who knows… it may be a new favourite?

The Romeo Section

Follows spymaster Professor Wolfgang McGee, an academic who secretly manages a roster of espionage assets. These assets, referred to as Romeo or Juliet spies, are informants engaged in intimate long or short term relations with state intelligence targets. Wolfgang is a semi-retired Romeo operator, having worked his way up from youth in an unnamed and officially deniable “service” under the umbrella of Canada’s Intelligence Community.

Watching this episode was a drag- it was just so boring and uninteresting. I took a break halfway through to watch Project Runway Junior and was browsing instagram on my phone throughout the episode. If it took all of my willpower to finish this one episode, there is little chance i will continue with the series.

The opening scene of a show should hook a viewer. It should be interesting and exciting- whether it is a beautiful cinematic sequence (i.e Hannibal), exciting action scene (Arrow) or an introduction to the events the episode will be exploring (Law and Order SVU).

‘The Romeo Section’ was none of these. The opening 10 minutes was a jumble of scenes, settings and characters with no evident connection or indication of a plot. There were so many characters introduced in short period of time- and i use the term ‘introduced’ very loosely. Even at the end of the 45 minute episode i have no idea who any of the characters are, how they relate to the plot or even what they contributed so far to the storyline.

The dialogue was boring. I cannot even think of something else to write about the dialogue as there is nothing more to say. And the fact the dialogue was so boring made the interactions between characters awkward and weird. The acting also did no favours to the writing. The main character Wolfgang constantly mumbled and spoke in a ‘low, dramatic, husky’ voice.

We get only a small glimpse into the ‘spy network’ hinted in the show description and even then it was underwhelming. Hearing the sentence  ‘These assets, referred to as Romeo or Juliet spies, are informants engaged in intimate long or short term relations with state intelligence targets’  made me excited at what this show could be. We did not see one of these state intelligence targets in the episode, or if we did it was not evident at all that this espionage was occurring.

Also i must comment on the music- to be it seemed they googled ‘dramatic music’ to put in the background. It was overpowering at times and really did not compliment the atmosphere and the scene that was attempted to be created.

Overall this show was a bore. I couldn’t pay attention at all as it was just so dull and uninteresting with plain dialogue, a dull colour scheme (very dull in lighting and saturation, like the Batman trilogy) with no evidence of an (engaging) story. I can confidently say i will not be watching the rest of the series, and will be surprised if it receives another series (however the next couple of episodes could be better. I am not one to stick around and find out when the first episode was so underwhelming)

So that is end of my first FIRST EPISODE FRIDAY

Let me know what ya’ll think and whether i should make it a community thing and involve all you wonderful people!
