So i signed up for Netflix a couple weeks back, as it was just released in Australia in late March and it blew my mind.
So much content so easily accessible, legal and it played the next episode automatically. But how amazing Netflix is will probably be the topic of another blog post or vlog in the near future
What i will talk about is a Netflix original show that was released on Netflix on April 10th this year, the whole season, 13 episodes, released in full true Netflix binge watching style.
I knew near to nothing about this character, i never was into comics as a child and only just got into them as a bigger child (now my room is a shrine to Captain America. This is my life now). I watched one episode of the show and bam! I was hooked.
Daredevil is a show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe focusing on Matt Murdock, a lawyer who became blind due to an accident in his childhood. Charlie Cox plays the lead role (whom i now have a massive crush on) of Matt, who we see throughout the show develop into the Daredevil ‘Superhero’ through personal struggles, his various relationships and the usualstruggle against some evil force. In this case, it is the crime syndicate which rules over Hells Kitchen-the part of New York where the show is set.
The show is so different to the usual Marvel shows and films. It is much darker, more gruesome (there was one point where i was actually grossed out at something that happened, in a Marvel show. A first.), and focuses on an entirely different type of hero. The villians in the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Agents of Shield and even to an extent Agent Carter are so much bigger-either extraterrestrial, supernatural, or on a world scale like the Hydra Incident on 2014. Daredevil has a different type of villain- crime lords, petty thieves, the gangs and crime syndicates the deal drugs and bribe and blackmail. It almost has an Arrow and Batman feel to it, and it is so very different for Marvel. This is similar for the heroes. Steve is a super solider, Bruce Banner is a scientist whose experiments trying to recreate the Captain America serum created the Hulk, Tony Stark is a millionaire genius who built Iron Man (a robotic suit that has lazers and guns and can fly. Sigh, Tony), Thor who is literally a God, Black Widow who is a trained assassin who has worked for Shield and other powerful organisations, Hawkeye who is an actual Legolas. There we have Daredevil, Matt Murdock, a vigilante who trained in martial arts to fight crime and being justice to his city. Everything is so different to what Marvel has previously released.
And i loved it.
The plot is amazing, and while some episodes are slow and lack in action, the character development proves to be of importance in the following events. Matt Murdock has become one of my favourite characters to date. His personality, his ideals, the fact that he is blind but the way he fights and what he can do is simply incredible, and i must mention the fact that he is very very attractive. The other characters too deserve a mention, Foggy (Elden Henson) is the loveable best friend of Matt, but he is not wholly dependant on Matts story arc to be an important character, and combined with Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) they drive their story line that compliments that of Murdocks. Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is an imposing character, and is the type of villain that Marvel needed-something different from Aliens, Gods and a Nazi Organisation.
The show didn’t rely on all the other features of the MCU to carry it. it stood alone in its characters, setting and plot. Though the little mentions to the Avengers as well as other characters and details in the MCU were a great inclusion.
I am super excited for the next of Marvels TV series. AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are yet to come. These 3 as well as Daredevil will feature in a cross over series called The Defenders (excited noises).
Daredevil is one of the best shows of 2015, and i know it is only April. The only thing i am disappointed about is that i watched the whole season in just a week, and i cannot rewatch it just yet.
